Both the girls began screaming as the older guy tried calming them down.
Nathan and Carter eached grabbed a girl by the arm.
"We have to get to that house!" Nathan screamed as he began to drag the paralyzed Carrie. The dog groweled as it tried to pull Ryan off balance.
Carter pushed Sarah who complied more easily towards the white house.
Ryan slammed his foot to the asphalt despite the teeth that tore into his leg through his jeans. James, now behind the beast, grabbed its tail and pulled. The dog refused to release its grasp on Ryan's right ankle and only seemed to increase its ferocousness. Ryan raised his left foot high in the air and brought his heel down forcefully on the beast's neck. There was a sickening crunch and the animal went limp.
"Well that's over..." James said as he released the tail. The dog looked much smaller now as its tounge rolled lifeless out of its mouth. Only a dirty mutt.
Blood drenched Ryan's sock as he bent down and lifted his jean leg up to inspect the damage.
A scream came from Carrie. Ryan ignored his wound for now and quickly snapped his attention towards the two girls who were being escorted by Nathan and Carter.
"Someone's in there!" She shouted as she pointed a finger at a second story window.
James briefly glanced at the dead mutt, then at Ryan(he'd live), then to Carrie, and finally at the house. All the windows were black and James didn't know who the hell Carrie was seeing. The house sat on a slight incline with an overgrown lawn inbetween itself and the group on the road. The house was painted white and was three stories tall. A carport that was connected to the house rested to the left, the drive way was **** and covered in weeds. An old, probably condemned porch led to a double door that appeared to be the entrance. Above it was a balcony that covered half of the second floor. Carrie was pointing at a window that was not over part of the balcony.
"I don't see anyone." James said as Ryan hobbled next to him as they returned to the group.
"Did you have to kill it?!" Sarah asked, the mystery figure in the house forgotten when she saw the crumpled beast in the road.
"I..." Ryan began.
James quickly cut him off. "Yes. It would have ripped his leg off if we gave it the chance."
Sarah seemed to accept this answer and looked down at Ryan's leg.
"Oh my God! You're bleeding!" she shrieked.
"No problem..." James said as he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket.
"Wait!" Ryan reached as James stepped back to avoid his grasp. "If you call for help they'll know we broke the curfew! I'll be fine."
"Yeah...you're right." James said as he removed the phone from his ear and put it back in his pocket. What he didn't let them know was he had already dialed 911 but the call wouldn't go through. Probably just a bad signal.
James reached into his pocket and withdrew his pack and the lighter. Only four left. He took one out and stuck it in between his lips. The lighter sparked as he struck it but refused to make a flame. He grumbled to himself as he tried repeatedly with no success. Out of fuel.
Carter spoke up, "Maybe we can get you some help in the house."
"But...Carrie saw someone in there!" Sarah said with distress in her voice.
"Yeah. They could be of some assistance right now." Carter countered. Carrie merrily wimpered and began to cry. Whoever she thought she saw must have shook her badly.
"Not if that was their dog we just stomped." Nathan said quietly.
